WEEE Compliance Scheme launched

The Trade Association GAMBICA has announced the launch of a compliance scheme to meet the needs of business-to-business product manufacturers and importers under the forthcoming waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) regulations. GAMBICA represents the interests of companies in the instrumentation, control, automation and laboratory technology industry.

The scheme, 'B2B Compliance', established following extensive consultation by a GAMBICA members' taskforce, together with DEFRA and DTI, will be registering as a compliance scheme primarily focusing on monitoring and control instrumentation (category 9), medical devices (category 8) and related IT equipment (category 3) of the WEEE Directive. It is intended that the scheme will take over many of the obligations of its individual company members in complying with WEEE legislation.

Chief Executive of GAMBICA, Geoff Young, commented "Whilst the general focus of the debate has been on household derived WEEE, there are enormous challenges to be faced by the B-to-B sector. We are convinced that a collective approach will achieve best value both for our members and for others in the B-to-B sector. The Association has established a not-for-profit company, GAMBICA B2B Compliance Ltd, to oversee the compliance scheme's development and operation which, we believe, will make an important contribution to achieving UK's compliance with the Directive. As the scheme is already running an operation for the collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment we have a wealth of experience when the WEEE regulations bite".

A series of seminars will take place in October covering the WEEE regulations and the benefits of scheme membership. Places can be booked through www.b2bcompliance.org.uk.
