WEEE
Regulations reach Parliament
The long awaited WEEE Regulations were placed before Parliament on 12th December and will come into force on 2nd January 2007.
Under the legislation, all UK Producers will have to take financial responsibility for their products at the end of their useful life and will be required to register under an approved Producer Compliance Scheme by 15th March 2007. The legislation will then be implemented in the UK on the 1st July 2007.
Commenting on the timescales, the UK’s largest business-to-business Producer Compliance Scheme, B2B Compliance felt that many companies may be leaving their decision to prepare for WEEE very late. Director, Peter Lawson said that one of the benefits of B2B Compliance was that once a company had joined, the Scheme would take responsibility for most of their obligations under the legislation. B2B Compliance already had a significant membership and was therefore in a good position to negotiate competitive rates for its members for logistics and recycling.
B2B Compliance Scheme will be formally registered with the Environment Agency as soon as the WEEE Regulations come into force on 2nd January 2007. The Scheme would then be able to submit data on behalf of its membership, which now covers over 130 companies in the business-to business sector, including major multinationals and a significant number of SME’s. The B2B Compliance website (www.b2bcompliance.org.uk) provides a full membership listing and details of how to join the Scheme.
