Today is International Women in Engineering Day. This Women’s Engineering Society (WES) event is celebrating its’ 10th year in 2023, promoting the amazing work of women engineers across the globe.
The GAMBICA membership includes lots of fantastic female engineers. Sarah Black-Smith, General Manager – Motion Control at Siemens Digital Industries, is passionate about encouraging other women to take up engineering as a career.
Sarah said: “Engineering touches every point of our society and there are so many amazing people in the industry. A career in engineering promises amazing tech to play with, working with inspiring people who are passionate about making an impact and being a part of solving some of society’s biggest problems.”
Susan Roche, General Manager at Solutions PT, comes from a long line of engineers but actually fell into the career by accident . She said: “It’s only later in life I have come to fully appreciate the immense importance of the industrial sector to society. We need to find ways to not only get women and young girls excited by STEM but to get them to stick with it throughout their education and careers.”
Susan added: “We need role models! We need an education pathway that girls and boys both find appealing. Engineering, at least here in the UK, also needs to be seen as the highly skilled, well paid profession that it is. Engineering is full of potential, it’s full of interesting and fulfilling careers and opportunities.”
