Introducing GAMBICA’s next member of the month – Middlesex University London

Middlesex University London, Department of Design Engineering and Mathematics offers a dynamic and practical range of courses that reflect modern industry practices across design, engineering and automation. Our programmes are built around the idea that innovation happens when education and industry connect.

We were among the first to join the Siemens Connected Curriculum embedding real-world engineering tools and digital technologies directly into teaching. Our practice-based approach ensures students graduate as responsible, innovative, and confident professionals ready to shape the future with their academic and technical skills.

Fact file:

  • Based in Hendon, North London, part of Middlesex University’s Faculty of Science and Technology
  • Proud partner in industry-connected education, blending theory and hands-on practice
  • Industry partnerships, some spanning over 30 years, with Siemens, Festo, Omron, Cisco, Altium, and National Instruments support our state-of-the-art labs and Smart Factory facilities
  • National organiser for WorldSkills UK competitions in Automation, Mechatronics and Laboratory Technologies.

Superstar staff member - Nick Weldin, Technical Tutor Engineering and Computer Science

Nick is our resident robotics expert and a cornerstone of the department’s hands-on learning culture. Whether he’s getting robots to perform a Mexican wave or sourcing the latest technology for our students, Nick brings energy, creativity, and humour into everything he does.

Nick also shares his passion through STEM outreach with local schools, sparking curiosity about robotics and technology in young minds.

Interesting insight…

At Middlesex, collaboration and community spirit are at the heart of what we do. Our staff and students are quick to apply their skills to make a real-world difference, even in times of crisis.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our engineering teams mounted a large-scale production of PPE face visors and surgical gowns for local NHS hospitals, showing that innovation and compassion can go hand in hand.

As a department, we are very proud to have built up a longstanding relationship with our industry partners in jointly working on ways to contribute bridging the skills gap the country is experiencing. We are one of the few universities leading the way in embedding industry practices into our curriculum, working alongside industry consortiums such as GAMBICA and charities such as WorldSkills UK to promote skills in Automation, Mechatronics, Robotics and Laboratory Technologies.

From industry-led design challenges to cutting-edge research in digital twins, robotics, and sustainable technologies, we’re proud to be a community that turns ideas into action for our students, our partners, and society.
