L@B Brief - August 2022
30 August 2022

Hello again,
It’s been reported this week that export credit payouts have hit a record high as the effects of the pandemic emerge. Berne Union, the association for the export credit and investment insurance industry says members paid just over USD 9 billion in claims in 2021, 17% higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2019. The growth in medium/long term export credit payouts are highly concentrated in the transportation sector which accounts for over 50% of total but the Union is predicting a more restricted market and tightened pricing overall if the current geo-political issues are sustained.
Like other economic indicators, this suggests that we will all be working harder just to maintain income even while we grapple with other sudden and unwelcome changes.
Meanwhile, the record temperatures this summer seem to have taken us over the tipping point at which people are starting to believe that significant and unwelcome changes in our climate are imminent and companies are starting to take their climate change obligations seriously.
The next conference in March 23 will have contributions from Merck and Astra Zeneca on their new sustainability requirements of our members and how they will be imposed and information on help available from GAMBICA to begin your journey to net zero. It’s also an opportunity to get together and find out how your peers are managing the current issues. A problem shared is a problem halved so I’m looking forward to seeing you there.
Toodle pip!
Jacqueline
