GAMBICA MEMBER, Trajan Scientific and Medical (Trajan), is a global developer and manufacturer of analytical and life sciences products and devices founded to enrich personal health through scientific tools and solutions. They aim to support science that benefits people. Trajan's products and solutions are used in the analysis of biological, food, and environmental samples. Trajan has a portfolio and pipeline of new technologies which support the move towards decentralised personalised data-based healthcare. Trajan comprises more than 650 people with seven manufacturing sites across the US, Australia, Europe, and Malaysia, with operations in Australia, the US, Asia, the UK and Europe.

Trajan with a strong background in chromatography and mass spectrometry, was founded to create an enterprise which would translate analytical science in tangible ways to directly benefit society.  Since it was founded in Australia in 2011 Trajan has grown significantly and is now the world’s largest manufacturer of many of its innovative technologies.

Named after Roman Emperor Trajan, who was known for his community building projects and social welfare concerns, the company has grown rapidly with acquisitions and has doubled turnover in the last two years alone. It set out its plans in 2011 when it acquired Grale Scientific and then both HDS, and SGE Analytical Science in 2013.  Over subsequent years Trajan acquired, Epic Extrusion, LEAP technologies, and Soltec Inc in the US, as well as expanding manufacturing operations into the US and  Malaysia. Since Trajan’s Initial Public Offering on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2021 it has expanded more strongly with an acquisition strategy which has added microsampling market leader Neoteryx, automation distributor, LEAP Pal Parts, automation experts, Axel Semrau, from Germany and Chromatography Research Supplies, of Kentucky to its portfolio.

Trajan manufactures and distributes its range of sample collection, sample preparation, analytical consumables, pathology products, automation platforms and solutions through OEM and Distribution partnerships. Trajan has distributors in all regions of the world aiming to grow its market presence and market share, in line with its overall purpose and mission.

UK based General Manager EMEA-I, Andy Hall, joined Trajan in 2014 when the UK arm of the organisation was located in Kiln Farm, (now in Crownhill) - Milton Keynes. Andy started his career at market leading industrial, automation, healthcare and electronics company, Omron, eventually rising to the position of EU operations manager for their components division. After 18 years at Omron he took on the role of European Operations Manager at SGE Analytical Science (now Trajan), and was promoted to General Manager EMEA-I in 2020 and also took over some of the sales functions management for the Americas. In July 2023 Andy added VP Global Distribution Channels to his responsibilities.

Trajan is further developing its Life Science division and in this space the company spans the development of medical devices for microsample collection and automated workflow solutions. This is an important growth area for the future says Andy:

“The global market for testing is growing strongly and Trajan is a big contributor to growth with its innovative solutions. Trajan and its stable of high quality brands and dedicated teams all align behind our core focus of Science that benefits People in our key markets of clinical, food & beverage, environmental and pharma/biopharma.”

Andy is a hands-on person and a lot of his time is spent managing his commercial teams around the world, visiting customers and exhibitions and also in managing the EMEA-I hub based in Milton Keynes.

Andy’s people skills have clearly been a major part in his success. When he started out in internal sales back in the early nineties, he was quickly adopted by the field sales teams and taken to meetings to ensure he was conversant with all side of the commercial process. As he moved into European operations management and then sales and general management, he retained his desire to keep his hand in, and still plays a very active role in direct sales management in India and the Middle East.  Andy enjoys working with different cultures and ways of doing business. “I try to understand first, before I start thinking about deploying any commercial strategies.”

A very active person, Andy also finds time for household DIY and landscaping, and lots of travel as well as being an avid reader of history and anything that involves ‘real life’. “It’s certainly a full and busy work and personal life,” says Andy.
